Classic Costa Rica: From Coast to Coast

Day 01 / Sarapiquí

At the airport one of our representatives will be waiting for you to explain you the itinerary and introduce you to your “Tico driver” (Tico is a colloquial word for Costa Rican), who is going to be with you during your entire vacations.  You will be taken to the Sarapiquí area and will be staying at the Selva Verde Lodge.

Day 02 / Sarapiquí

Breakfast at the Selva Verde Lodge.

After breakfast, you are going to be driving to the Rio Danta Restaurant to meet your guide and transportation to Tortuguero. Your journey will proceed to the dock at either La Pavona in Guapiles or Caño Blanco rivers in the town of Siquirres (La Pavona is our main port of operation, but depending on weather conditions it might be necessary to change to Caño Blanco).

11:00 a.m.  After arriving at the pier, we’ll have a restroom stop and you will board Mawamba’s boat for a one-hour ride to Tortuguero and your hotel (times might vary depending on river’s water level). On the first part of the journey, you ́ll be navigating on “La Suerte” River, and, as you get closer to the Tortuguero area, you will get into the wider Tortuguero river.

12:15-1:00 p.m.  Arrival to the hotel. Welcome by the manager, and check-in to your room. Afterward, you’ll meet your tour guide and the group at the Restaurant for a buffet lunch (lunch available 12:30 – 2:00 p.m.).

2:30 – 3:00 p.m. You’ll visit the Village of Tortuguero after lunch, walk along with your guide and group. Through this visit, you will learn the lifestyle of the local residents of Tortuguero, a small town of approx. 1300 people. After the visit back to the hotel, leisure time, we will return to the Lodge walking by the beach trail. In case you’d rather not walk, please inform your tour guide who will arrange boat transportation back for you.

7:30 p.m. Meet your guide and group at the restaurant for dinner, served from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m.

Day 03 / Tortuguero

Breakfast will be available from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m.

You will enjoy a morning tour with your naturalist guide (usually around 9.30 a.m.), we will visit the “Mawamba Nature Park”, that has butterflies garden, frog garden, bio-digester and river turtle’s area. The bio-digester is used to treat the residual waters of the Lodge to transform them into a natural source of methane gas to warm up the stoves, 30% of the gas use at the Lodge comes from the bio-digester. Afterward, we’ll a walk in the trails at the Lodge.

12:30 p.m. Lunch will be served at the restaurant by the pool from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

2:00 pm Tour to Tortuguero National Park. We will visit one of the park’s canals by boat and discover with your guide the extraordinary local biodiversity. We recommend you bring your windbreaker or rain gear.  Rain can always be expected in the rainforest! We will be back to the Lodge by 4:15 p.m and have leisure time before dinner.

7:00 p.m. Private dinner in a Gazebo located in the tropical garden of the Lodge.

Day 04 / Tortuguero - Arenal

7:30 a.m. Breakfast at the Lodge. Please check out of your room around 8:30 a.m., and gather around the reception/souvenir shop area for departure at 9:00 a.m.

11:00 am. Arrival to La Pavona, we’ll have a restroom stop before taking our van for our drive to Arenal

1:00 p.m. Stop for lunch at Mawamba’s Río Danta Restaurant in the town of Guápiles, where your “Tico driver” will be waiting for you to take you to your next destination; Arenal.

You will be arriving at the Tabacon Resort Hotel and Spa by around 5 p.m.

Day 05 / Arenal

We have some optional tours which we can offer you, and you can decide which one would suit you better, these you can discuss with your “Tico driver” and he or she will organize the tours.

Arenal Volcano Hike

This is a “must do” tour in Arenal! This fantastic light hike will take you to the base of the volcano (at a safe range), to observe the magnificence of the 5479 ft tall almost conical Arenal Volcano. This colossus is active since 1968, and even though it has been peaceful lately, it’s an exceptional adventure.

During the hike, our well-informed tour guide will teach you all kinds of details of the volcano: a little bit of history, its activity periods and will show you some remnants that have left over the years.

We love nature because is always unpredictable and has a surprise every day for us. As an example, our guests in this hike have experienced a close approach to the wildlife of the place. Howler monkeys, sloths, wild pigs and many different species of birds such as toucans and hawks, just to mention a few ones, have had come to say hello along the walk.

Astonishing views, ear-catching information, unbelievable stories and the chance to meet the local wildlife, will remain as your favorite memories of Costa Rica after this tour with Aventuras Arenal.

La Fortuna Waterfall by Car and Chocolate Tour

With the view of the grand Arenal Volcano in La Fortuna, enjoy the sweetest rainforest adventure, discovering the ancient secrets of chocolate: from its discovery and use in tropical America to the processing of the product as we know it and enjoy it today.

In this 2-hour “hands-on” program, you will have the chance to learn fascinating aspects of chocolate and cocoa from its origin and history, engage in all the production process from the collecting of the fruit to the drying and grinding of the seed, the developing of the tradition and the delicious drink our ancestors had, and of course enjoy a high quality organic chocolate.

Once we get the chocolate energy and deliciousness, we’ll drive to La Fortuna Waterfall Reserve. Where over 4000 ml precipitation a year gives you the chance to enjoy this majestic 210 feet high fall; five hundred meters downhill will give you the opportunity to see it from the very bottom where a “natural pool” awaits if you want to swim in the fresh water of La Fortuna river.

Day 06 / Arenal - Monteverde

Breakfast at the Tabacon Resort and Spa.

We have for you the lake crossing to Monteverde. This service, half tour – half transfer is a scenic, fast and the newest way to go or come from La Fortuna (Arenal Volcano Area), to the Monteverde area.  You will board a very comfortable and secure pontoon boat for 30 to 40 minutes (approx.) ride to Río Chiquito, a small town at the opposite side of the lake. The Arenal Lake is the biggest and most important lake in Costa Rica; it created in 1974 and man-made to produce hydroelectric power for the country. It is also a site where you can find various kinds of native and migratory birds. Sometimes mammals can be spotted in the surroundings; you will also get great views of the Arenal Volcano when it’s clear.  Once at Río Chiquito, we’ll leave the boat and make a short break to strengthen the legs, and then, another 1-1/2 hour ride in a van to get to our hotel in Monteverde area, if it’s on the rainy season, this transfer could take longer.

Duration: 3 1 / 2 hours approx.

Includes: microbus & boat transportation.

While you cross the lake your “Tico driver” will be departing earlier to find you in Monteverde when you get there.

Day 07 / Monteverde – Manuel Antonio

Today we offer you the opportunity to visit Selvatura.

This Adventure Park is established on over 1,200 acres (486 hectares) of protected virgin cloud forest and, much of this land is unavailable to the public. There are, however, a handful of activities that allow visitors to experience a significant – and beautiful – portion of the park. In Selvatura we recommend you the Rain Forest Package which includes: canopy tour, butterflies garden, hummingbird garden and lunch at the restaurant. After taking the tour, we are taking you directly to Manuel Antonio.

Day 08 / Manuel Antonio

This will be a day of leisure at the hotel, to relax and enjoy the area.  After breakfast, you are going to be pick up to enjoy a deluxe tour to the Manuel Antonio National Park. You will take a pleasant hike with a certified tour guide, prepared in education and the investigation of our bio-diversity which consists of a magnificent tropical forest that has been preserved for over 40 years. Explore the isolated beaches of the park and the outstanding variety of flora and fauna.  The pace of this adventure is defined by the skills and interests of your party, and the quantity of wildlife you wish to observe. Sloths and various species of monkeys are moving through the treetops, anteaters and iguanas are sleeping in the tropical jungle, and the melodies of the multiple birds will ensure an unforgettable experience. Be alert and hopefully we will be able to find one of the remaining squirrel monkeys of which barely 1000 are left worldwide. This threatened species live in only one place in the world, the Manuel Antonio National Park, a biological corridor. To round up the tour, you will be able to immerse your feet in the crystal clear water at the gorgeous white sand beaches of the park. You receive lunch afterward the completion of the tour.

Day 09 / Manuel Antonio – San José

Breakfast at the hotel.

At 1:00 p.m. you are going to be picked up in the lobby of the Parador Hotel for your transfer service to the Quepos airstrip.

You will flight back to San Jose where your “Tico driver” will be waiting for you to take you to the Park Inn hotel.

Day 10 / Departure Day – San José

Breakfast at the hotel.

You have to be at the airport three hours before the plane departure time.
